They are as follows: Class I – Electric Rider Counter- balanced, Class II – Electric Rider Narrow Aisle, Class III - Electric Motor Hand/W alkie (motorized pallet jacks), Class IV – Internal Combusti on Cushion Tires, Class V – Internal Combustion Pneumatic Tires, Class VI – Internal Combustion & Electric Tractors (bag- gage cart tugs), and Class VII – Rough T errain (con- struction forklifts).
The Industrial Truck Association has categorized powered industrial trucks (PIT) into seven (7) classes. The revision applies to all industries (general industry, construction, shipyards, marine terminals, and longshoring operations) in which powered indus- trial trucks are being used, except agricultural opera- tions.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) revised this standard in an effort to “reduce the number of injuries and deaths that occur as a result of inadequate operator training.” OSHA estimates that this revision will prevent 11 deaths and 9,422 injuries per year.
